NEW Bognor Regis town manager Toyubur Rahman has said he is eager to start work.
Mr Rahman was the unanimous choice of the interview panel from the five candidates. He is due to take up his new role in May.
He said: “I am delighted to have been appointed to this vital role and I am looking forward to the immense challenge of helping Bognor and its businesses to achieve their potential to become the premier seaside town for the UK – a town which builds on its heritage and embraces modernity to provide every visitor an experience worth having.”
Mr Rahman has more than 15 years of experience in retail and town centre management.
He works for the Association of Town and City Management. This is the national body that promotes and co-ordinates town and city centre management.
Martin Blackwell, its chief executive, said: “Although sad to be losing someone of his capabilities, I am delighted for Toyubur and Bognor.”
“Our loss is their gain and having worked with Toyubur for a number of years, I know that he will bring not only energy and enthusiasm but a deep understanding of what makes a place tick.”
The recent interviews for the town centre manager role were the second set to take place. The initial ones at the end of last year failed to produce an appointment.
But the partners in the Bognor Regis Regeneration Board, which is funding the role for £250,000 for four-and-a-half years, were determined to try again. They include the University of Chichester, town, district and county councils and firms such as Butlin’s and Sime Darby.
Dr Dave Cooper, from the university, chaired the panel.
He said: “We had some really good candidates in the second round but Toyubur’s creativity and experience shone through.”
Panel member Chris Heaps, of Bognor Regis Traders’ Association, said: “I am confident the traders will welcome working with Toyubur. We look forward to supporting his role in making Bognor a destination town once more.”
Board regeneration advisor Richard McMann said all its partners had been committed to seeking a town centre manager.
