Refurbishment Work Update - August 2022

Centennial Celebrations

On Friday 17 January The Picturedrome celebrated 100 years in style.

Picturedrome Managing Director Adam Cunard welcomed the great and the good from the local area as well as many industry colleagues; including Merlin Cinemas and The Uckfield Picturehouse. Adam recounted visiting the cinema as a small child to watch Disney’s Aladdin, and some 25 years later he now runs this cinema along with 6 others across the UK. Also in attendance was Susan Keane, the granddaughter of the first official manager of the cinema back in 1919!

The evening kicked off in style with a drinks reception accompanied by the Centenary Jazz Quartet. Local Historian Sylvia Endicott then took us through the amazing history of the building before the finale; some of the amazing adverts through the years followed by a 35mm print of The Smallest Show on Earth, after which we all stood for Her Majesty the Queen as the National Anthem played out in all its cinematic glory. 4th Screen Opens

The Picturedrome’s fourth screen, officially numbered Screen Two, opened in January 2019 to allow extra films to be shown.

The £1m extension to the Victorian building was delayed because of the need for extra safety checks. But the owner, Bognor Regis Town Council, and the operator, Picturedrome Electric Theatre Company, finally got the go-head to admit the public to the 102 seats.

The first film to be shown, at short notice, was seasonal comedy The Grinch at 1pm on December 21.

Adam Cunard, managing director of the Picturedrome Electric Theatre Company, said: “I’m pleased we have finally been able to open the fourth screen at the Picturedrome.

“Having the additional screen will enable us to show more films than ever before to provide residents of the Bognor Regis area and beyond with additional choice. We hope our regular audiences will enjoy the comfort of the modern surroundings of the new screen and they will be joined by those yet to experience the latest technology in our historic building.

“Our commitment to providing excellent value for money stays unchanged as we start this new year and new chapter in the cinema’s history.”

COMING SOON, TO A CINEMA NEAR YOU!

Following many years of listening to local cinema-goers and the general public about whether to build a new cinema screen, at the Picturedrome, the fourth screen is finally on its way. The near £1m project financed by Bognor Regis Town Council, who own the building, is scheduled for completion in April 2018. When complete, the new fourth screen will be a state of the art, 110 seat auditorium, seamlessly linked to the rest of Bognor Regis' hugely popular picture house, with the latest digital sound and projection plus sumptuous luxury seating.

At the moment, demolition work is going on at the back of the cinema to make way for the new screen which was slightly delayed due to having to undertake work on a temporary fire escape. That has now all been sorted, thanks to the support of the owner of the Regis Burger restaurant, who has allowed the fire escape to run past part of his premises. The next step will then be to lay foundations and drainage followed by steel construction work. We will provide regular updates so that you can follow the progress of this exciting project.

Picturedrome Cinemas' Managing Director, Adam Cunard, said "Adding a fourth screen to the Picturedrome is another part of the Town's regeneration and will act as a magnet to bring local and outside visitors to Bognor Regis. We aim to provide a first-class cinema experience to all our customers and with four screens on offer, that experience will only get better."
